Saint Francis Service Dogs: Puppy Raiser Progrrams

Saint Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation is looking for dog lovers to open their hearts and homes to special puppies. Puppies are tested for temperament and ability, and are accepted into the program as young as seven weeks of age.

They live with volunteer puppy raisers until they are approximately 12-15 months old, at which time they continue their career with a Saint Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation trainer.

Saint Francis Service Dogs

Saint Francis Service Dogs was formed in 1996 as a secular, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in Roanoke, Virginia, to raise and train service dogs for individuals with physical and/or emotional disabilities, enabling them to become more independent and self-sufficient through partnership with a service dog. Saint Francis places 7-10 dogs a year in the state of Virginia. It takes two years to train a service dog and costs up to $20,000 per service dog. We provide our dogs free of charge to qualified candidates.

The Psychiatric Service Dog Society (PSDS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to responsible Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) education, advocacy, research and training facilitation. We provide essential information for persons disabled by severe mental illness, who wish to train a service dog to assist with the management of symptoms. We consult regularly with mental healthcare providers in their efforts to learn more about PSD. We also host an online community of service dog handlers veteran and new. Please note: we do not provide or train dogs for individuals. We are an educational and capacity-building organization dedicated to responsible Psychiatric Service Dog community stewardship.
